The Year On gap year program is divided into three successive phases — Explore, Focus, and Launch. Each phase builds upon the other as Fellows learn new concepts and skills and put them into practice.
Phase 1: Explore
Fellows begin by setting out to one of our international locations to volunteer and immerse themselves in a new culture. Our Explore locations include India, Tanzania, Indonesia, Mexico, and Peru. Fellows choose from volunteer projects such as teaching English or computer skills, caring for disabled children and adults, environmental conservation, and women’s empowerment.
Phase 2: Focus
Once returning from abroad, Fellows head to San Francisco where they work with coaches, attend life skill workshops, and build a portfolio of work. Fellows live together in our Year On dorm and work every day at our co-working space in SoMa, the heart of San Francisco’s startup world.
Phase 3: Launch
During the Launch phase, Fellows apply everything they learned during the Explore and Focus phases to the real world, with the support of a community of Fellows and coaches. Fellows can choose to Launch anywhere they’d like, and can choose from creating their own project, completing an internship, taking a class, or attending a bootcamp.
