Venture Semester provides young adults with life-changing experiences in food, farming and leadership in the Green Mountains of Vermont. As a program of the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, corps members live, learn and travel together as a crew of eight, guided by two highly passionate crew leaders. From seed to harvest, corps members are immersed in every aspect of food and food production: milking cows, raising honey bees, boiling sap, harvesting tomatoes, making jams and jellies. The crew learns from farmers, expert teachers, and agricultural leaders daily. Opportunities for outdoor adventure also abound; corps members hike, kayak, swim and bike across Vermont’s landscape over the course of the season.
As a crew, they learn together what it really takes to grow food. By season’s end, corps members have learned as much about themselves and their place in the world as they have about food systems and agriculture.
