City Year is an education-focused nonprofit that unites young people in a year of full-time national service, while empowering them to continue their education and acquire skills for their futures. We believe that young people have the power to change the world, and we believe that national service is a valuable tool to tackle society’s most pressing problems.
Seeking to keep students in school and on track to graduation, City Year AmeriCorps members provide individual and whole classroom support to youth across 29 cities. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course performance, AmeriCorps members are positioned to help students and schools succeed using a holistic, near-peer model.
City Year alumni are offered exclusive scholarships at 120+ higher education institutions, including 19 undergraduate schools. More than 90% of these schools offer 25-100% tuition scholarships for City Year alumni. Additionally, AmeriCorps members are offered an education award valuing $6,095 upon completion of their service, in addition to a living stipend and other benefits provided throughout their year of service.
City Year AmeriCorps members gain important insight and skills that prepare them for college and the workforce. Regarding serving a gap year with City Year, high school graduate and City Year Seattle/King County ’13 alum, Mohamad Adan, shares: “City Year helped me develop professional skills such as fundraising, event planning, teamwork and networking, which are all beneficial to me as a student at Stanford University where I’m an intended history major planning to go on to law school.”
Not only does City Year offer AmeriCorps Members professional growth and scholarships, we also offer a unique gap year experience. While students all over the country are writing about their academic aspirations and extracurricular activities in their college applications, our AmeriCorps members tell a different story: a story of service, where they made a true impact.
