City Year was founded in 1988 on the belief that young people can change the world. City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service aimed at keeping students in school and on track to graduation. At City Year’s 28 urban locations across the U.S., teams of trained young people called AmeriCorps members serve full-time in schools during the academic year as tutors, mentors and role models. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course performance, which identify students who are at risk of not graduating on time, AmeriCorps members are positioned to help students and schools succeed.

City Year alumni are offered exclusive scholarships at 100+ higher education institutions, including 19 undergraduate schools. More than 90% of these schools offer 25-100% tuition scholarships for City Year alumni. Additionally, AmeriCorps members are offered an education award valuing $5,920 upon completion of their service.

Taking a year to do something meaningful can help you learn more about what you want out of your college experience and academic pursuits. As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you will gain important adaptability skills that are needed for transitioning into college life. Many colleges will even allow you to defer acceptance to pursue a gap year program. While students all over the country are writing about their academic aspirations and extracurricular activities, you have the opportunity to tell a different story. Why not talk about the year you spent making a real difference in the world?
