Looking for a meaningful and challenging learning experience before college?
The American University Gap Program provides a unique opportunity to explore your interests, develop new skills, taste campus life, and earn college credit while taking advantage of all that Washington DC has to offer.
When you arrive on campus, our staff and faculty help you get resume-ready and poised for your internship. You will have access to our database with more than 3,000 listings of organizations in politics, business, the arts, journalism, sports management, environmental advocacy, and more. You choose where to apply.
In addition to interning three days per week, you will take a seminar in either American Politics or International Affairs and meet weekly with your peers and professor to reflect on the internship experience and focus on self-development. You will go on site visits all over DC led by AU professors and engage in small group sessions with guest speakers, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of government, business, and the non-profit world.
You will live on campus as part of a diverse and engaged student body representing more than 130 countries and all 50 states. Attend plays, concerts, films, residence hall social activities, and intramural sports. Join one of more than the 200 student organizations. Get front row seats for visiting writers, artists, journalists, and political leaders who frequent the AU campus.
This is your chance to experience life in our nation’s capital.
